Dear Potential Client:
Bouncing around from one career path to another can be challenging, to say the least, but for me it also has been an interesting learning experience. I have been a full time freelance writer and editor since 1999, but prior to that I worked at a telephone equipment manufacturing plant, a potash mine, a university and two technical colleges. In between I owned and operated an industrial electronics business and traveled throughout North America teaching technical seminars. During the early part of my career I worked on our family's farm, sold televisions and stereos, made spare change playing in a band and even worked in a fur store.
I decided to try writing magazine articles in the early eighties. Much to my surprise my first electronics article sold on my first attempt. I followed that up with at least a dozen more before I received my first rejection slip. Writing a column on electrical and electronic applications in agriculture for a farm newspaper taught me how to meet deadlines, how to write simple, clean explanations of complex topics and how to write in a style appropriate for the targeted reader.
Nine years of teaching electronics and instrumentation and developing training materials taught me how to organize information around focused learning objectives and create activities and evaluation exercises. My first foray into self-publishing and internet marketing yielded surprising results when my book on precision agriculture sold better (and more profitably) than expected. Eight years producing market research reports gave me lots of opportunity to hone interviewing and data analysis skills. I also learned how to structure, format and edit technology-related reports for non-technical readers. Along the way I picked up team building and leadership skills working in a virtual environment, leading reporters located throughout North America , Europe and Asia .
I know, all this sounds like bragging, but my real intention is to profile the scope of my skills and experience, and also to provide some insight into my motivations and values. I'm a helper by nature. I like being the guy behind your success, doing my best to make your product/service look good and satisfy your customer. And I enjoy the learning/understanding/communicating process--developing it and refining it--then using it to meet the practical purposes of my clients.
My mission is to satisfy my clients by providing them with the highest quality writing services possible. My goal is to accomplish this by developing mutually beneficial relationships with all my clients, and basing these relationships on value, quality, and integrity. I hope you will give me the opportunity to develop that kind of a relationship with you. . .
